The history of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy
- In 1985 Dr’s Chariker & Jeter pioneered the use of suction to treat wounds utilizing a gauze dressing and wall suction. The Kremlin papers document its use in Russia even earlier.
- 1997 Dr. Louis Argenta of Wake Forest University developed NPWT device and foam dressing. KCI bought the rights to market the device
- 2003 Blue Sky Medical launches the Versatile1 based on the original dressing technique of Chariker/Jeter
- 2005 SunMED partners with Blue Sky. Becomes national NPWT provider for Aetna and first national competitor to KCI
- 2007 Court determines that Blue Sky does not infringe upon KCI patent opening up the market to other manufacturers.
- 2007 Smith & Nephew acquires Blue Sky
- 2009 KCI patent on foam dressing expires
