The history of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy

  • In 1985 Dr’s Chariker & Jeter pioneered the use of suction to treat wounds utilizing a gauze dressing and wall suction. The Kremlin papers document its use in Russia even earlier.
  • 1997 Dr. Louis Argenta of Wake Forest University developed NPWT device and foam dressing. KCI bought the rights to market the device
  • 2003 Blue Sky Medical launches the Versatile1 based on the original dressing technique of Chariker/Jeter
  • 2005 SunMED partners with Blue Sky. Becomes national NPWT provider for Aetna and first national competitor to KCI
  • 2007 Court determines that Blue Sky does not infringe upon KCI patent opening up the market to other manufacturers.
  • 2007 Smith & Nephew acquires Blue Sky
  • 2009 KCI patent on foam dressing expires
